Held as a fringe event to the 2011 Singapore Writers Festival, the Meet-The-Author session with US-based Singaporean author Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan at Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store on Saturday, 29th October 2011 generated an encouraging number of customers who were interested to hear her speak on her book A Tiger In The Kitchen. During the hour-long event which attracted a mixture of locals, expatriates as well as tourists, Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan explained what her book was about – With ten authentic recipes for Singaporean classics such as Teochew braised duck included in the book, A Tiger In The Kitchen tells the story of a Chinese-Singaporean expatriate, who learns to infuse her New York lifestyle with the rich lessons of the Singaporean kitchen, ultimately reconnecting with her family and herself. During the event, Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan also further elaborated about her cooking experiences and advices that were given to her by her aunties. She then did a short reading from the book – an excerpt which captured the conversational moments she had with her aunties on the process of making pineapple tarts. The author who was in town for the Singapore Writers Festival spoke with eloquence and articulately when she addressed the crowd. Her confidence, coupled with the tantalising topic of Singapore cuisine as the gist of A Tiger In The Kitchen, resulted in several enthusiastic customers purchasing more than one copy of her book as gifts for their family and friends. |
