POST-EVENT REPORT: Comic Fans Mayhem!

10th September 2011 (Saturday)
Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store

Books Kinokuniya presented an exclusive one-day comic affair at our three stores on Saturday, 10th September 2011 with a 'Comic Fans Mayhem' promotion for Kinokuniya Privilege Card members to enjoy savings of 20% for all of their comic purchases during this day. To add to the excitement of fan boys and girls, Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store also presented two comic-related events, a meet-the-artist session with Sonny Liew for his latest creative work Malinky Robot: Collected Stories And Other Bits, followed by a very special movie-sharing session with famed Mangaka Yoshihiro Tatsumi and home-grown director Eric Khoo in conjunction with the release of the director's movie animation of Tatsumi.

Sonny Liew's event at 2.00 p.m. proved to be unique from the usual meet-the-artists sessions when the Eisner-nominated comic artist invited Singaporean singer-songwriter Kevin Matthews to perform robot-themed songs, including an original Malinky Robot tune during the session. On top of drawing and signing on customers' copies of Malinky Robot: Collected Stories And Other Bits, Sonny Liew also gave away Malinky Robot umbrellas to three lucky customers who bought his comic book in a lucky draw conducted before the event ended.

The crowd-puller for the day was the special appearance of legendary Mangaka Yoshihiro Tatsumi, together with popular Japanese actor Tetsuya Bessho, renowned local director Eric Khoo, associate producer Masato Yamamoto and animation creative director Phil Mitchell for a movie-sharing session on Eric Khoo's animated tribute to the manga artist titled Tatsumi. The insightful session which started at 3.30 p.m. saw the invited guests speaking passionately about their involvement in the movie production, and was a hit with customers as many of them were seen crowding around to participate in the event and snapping photos enthusiastically. Twenty eager fans and customers, who presented their purchases of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's works during the session, were also fortunate enough to get their copies of the manga artist's works autographed by him. True to his dedication to his creative works, Yoshihiro Tatsumi spent an average of 5 to 10 minutes on each customer during the signing session, as he went the extra mile to draw on their copies of his several book titles, to the great delight of his fans.

Be sure to look out for more of such themed promotions happening at Books Kinokuniya in the near future!
